About this event
Three distinguished historians (Jim McAloon, Charlotte Macdonald and Jock Phillips) come together to reflect on the life, work and enduring legacy of fellow historian Erik Olssen, who died in July 2026. Olssen’s most recent book, The Origins of an Experimental Society: New Zealand, 1769–1860, was published by Auckland University Press in 2025 to critical acclaim. The culmination of decades of research, the book explores the ideas, beliefs and encounters that shaped early Aotearoa New Zealand, examining how Māori and Pākehā influenced the development of a distinctive society. A respected academic at the University of Otago, Olssen dedicated his career to understanding New Zealand’s social, political and intellectual history. His contribution extended beyond his extensive body of scholarship, as he was also a valued teacher, mentor and colleague who influenced generations of historians. At this special tribute, each speaker will share personal reflections on Olssen’s influence and consider the lasting contribution his research and writing have made to the study and understanding of New Zealand history.
