About this event

From surviving a near-fatal accident in Europe to reporting from some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous environments, award-winning journalist Charlotte Glennie has witnessed extraordinary moments in recent history. In her gripping memoir, Every Second Counts, she reflects on a remarkable career as a foreign correspondent and the human stories behind the headlines. Charlotte’s experiences span North Korea, Mongolia and Russia, as well as reporting live in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which claimed more than 230,000 lives. She also recounts covering the plight of refugees in southern Bangladesh, battling monsoon conditions in the world’s largest refugee camp. In conversation with former journalist Celia Crosbie, Charlotte will share insights into reporting on people facing extreme circumstances, the challenges of bearing witness to human suffering, and what it means to tell these stories with compassion and integrity. This is a fascinating opportunity to hear first-hand about the realities of international journalism and the experiences that shaped one correspondent’s life and career. Charlotte spent more than two decades in broadcast journalism, including many years working in Asia, and has reported for major media organisations including the BBC, ABC and TVNZ. Her accolades include New Zealand’s Supreme Award for Excellence in Television Journalism and a New Zealand Government Special Service Medal for her reporting following the Asian tsunami. Celia Crosbie (Kāi Tahu) is an award-winning former journalist and the founder and managing director of Wānaka-based communications consultancy Scope Communications. She is also chair of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand, bringing a wealth of media experience and a passion for authentic storytelling to the conversation.
