About this event
Why do toddlers have meltdowns, tweens test the limits and teenagers sometimes make baffling decisions? Neuroscience educator Nathan Wallis explores the science behind these behaviours, helping parents and caregivers understand what’s happening in the developing brain at every stage of childhood and adolescence. Drawing on his first published book, What Were You Thinking?, Nathan explains how the brain grows and changes from birth through to adulthood, and why children’s behaviour often makes more sense when viewed through the lens of brain development. From navigating toddler tantrums to supporting teenagers as they make decisions, this engaging discussion offers insights into nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence and healthy development. Nathan will be joined by Queenstown teacher Chris Fitzpatrick, who will chair the conversation. Together, they’ll explore how understanding the developing brain can help adults respond to children with greater empathy, support and confidence. About Nathan Wallis Nathan Wallis is a leading New Zealand neuroscience educator, father of three and foster parent. With a professional background spanning child counselling, teaching and social service management, he has also lectured in Human Development at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. Nathan delivers hundreds of presentations to parents and professionals across New Zealand and Australia, translating neuroscience research into practical insights about children’s learning, behaviour and development. About Chris Fitzpatrick Chris Fitzpatrick is an experienced educator who has taught primary, secondary and adult learners. She has a particular interest in strengthening literacy skills among both students and teachers, and is a keen reader who enjoys exploring new perspectives through books. Supported by Mactodd Community Charitable Trust. Part of the Queenstown Writers Festival, running 5–8 November 2026.
