About this event
Step back into Ponsonby’s community activism of the 1970s at the launch of Ponsonby People’s Union – At the Frontline of Community Activism in the 1970s, written by Roger Fowler and fellow activists. The event brings together people connected to the People’s Union for an afternoon of conversation, music and refreshments, with former members sharing memories and stories from their involvement in the movement. About the Book Formed in Ponsonby in the early 1970s, the Ponsonby People’s Union was a grassroots group that focused on practical community action and support. Its work extended across a range of issues affecting local communities, including housing, access to food, prison visits, legal assistance and discrimination. The group worked with tenants, immigrants, older people, prisoners and their families, supported Māori and Pacific communities in opposing racism, and took part in the occupation of Takaparawhau, Bastion Point. Drawing on the recollections of Roger Fowler and other former supporters, the book records the history of the People’s Union and the people involved in its campaigns and community initiatives. Copies will be available to browse and purchase at the launch.
