Book launch: Ponsonby People's Union

A new book documenting the history of the Ponsonby People’s Union will be launched at Auckland Central Library, bringing together former members and supporters of the community movement to share their memories and experiences. Written by Roger Fowler and fellow activists, Ponsonby People’s Union – At the Frontline of Community Activism in the 1970s looks back at the people, campaigns and community initiatives that emerged from Ponsonby during a period of significant social and political change. The launch will include music, refreshments and personal stories from members of the People’s Union, offering an opportunity to hear directly from some of those involved. About the Book The Ponsonby People’s Union emerged in the early 1970s, when a group of young activists began developing practical ways to support people in their local community. Operating independently and without substantial financial backing or formal organisational status, the group became involved in a range of community issues. Its activities included running a low-cost food co-operative, organising transport for prison visits, providing legal assistance and supporting tenants experiencing difficulties with landlords. The Union also worked alongside Māori and Pacific communities in campaigns against racism and participated in the occupation of Takaparawhau, Bastion Point. The book brings together the recollections of Roger Fowler and other People’s Union supporters, documenting the experiences of a group that sought to put its political and social ideals into practice through grassroots community action.
