About this event
Hachette Aotearoa New Zealand and Scorpio Books warmly invite you to the Ōtautahi Christchurch launch of The World Beneath Our Feet: The Hidden Life of Soil and Why It Matters to Us All by Frank Ashwood. We’re often told to look up to appreciate the wonders of the world around us - but what if we looked down instead? In The World Beneath Our Feet, soil ecologist Frank Ashwood takes readers on an eye-opening journey into the mysterious world beneath our feet. From the ancient forests of Aotearoa New Zealand to the vast black soil deposits of the United States and China, he explores the remarkable ecosystems that sustain life above ground. As we travel deeper into the Earth, each layer of the pedosphere reveals a world of its own — full of fascinating organisms and hidden connections. About the author Dr Frank Ashwood is a soil ecologist and macrophotographer specialising in soil invertebrates. He is a Lecturer in Ecology and Entomology at Lincoln University and previously worked as a scientist for Forest Research, part of the British Government’s Forestry Commission. Frank is an Associate Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Zoology and a member of the Royal Society of Biology. His work has featured across international media including the BBC, The Guardian and The New York Times, and his soil animal photography has been exhibited internationally. Event details This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be available from 5.30pm, with the event beginning at 6pm. RSVPs are required.
