- About this event
Join Time Out Bookstore for the launch of Consciousness: A Book of Thinking, the latest work from acclaimed New Zealand writer, educator and cultural commentator Roger Horrocks. What exactly is consciousness, and how does it shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us? Despite being central to our everyday experience, consciousness remains one of the greatest mysteries of science and philosophy. In this fascinating and accessible book, Horrocks explores the nature of human awareness, drawing on insights from science, philosophy and the arts. He examines competing theories about the mind, the complexities of subjective experience and contemporary debates surrounding artificial intelligence, including whether machines could ever possess consciousness. An Emeritus Professor at the University of Auckland, Horrocks has made significant contributions to New Zealand's literary and cultural landscape. His achievements include receiving the Royal Society's Pou Aronui Prize and being appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). His philosophical poetry collection, Song of the Ghost in the Machine, was a finalist in the 2016 New Zealand Book Awards. Consciousness: A Book of Thinking completes a thought-provoking trilogy that began with A Book of Seeing and A Book of Listening. Celebrate the publication of this intriguing new work and explore some of the most fundamental questions about what it means to think, feel and be conscious.
