About this event
Celebrate the beginning of the festival at its much-loved gala opening, an evening of literary conversation, inspiring ideas and good company. The evening begins with wine and canapés before festival guests take the stage to explore this year’s theme, Ka Mua, Ka Muri - Walking Backwards into the Future. Bringing together perspectives from literature, culture, politics and human behaviour, the discussion will consider how looking to the past can help us understand the present and shape the future. The impressive line-up includes internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka, alongside Kiri Allan, Tīhema Baker, Kate Camp, Simon Lendrum, Megan Nicol Reed and Nathan Wallis. Returning as host is the irrepressible Emma Lange, who will guide the evening’s conversations. With thought-provoking discussion, fascinating guests and a welcoming festival atmosphere, the gala opening is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow readers and writers and get into the spirit of the festival. The evening concludes with more canapés and conversation.
