- About this event
Join Unity Books Wellington, Āporo Press and Whitireia Publishing for the launch of Mincemeat, the eagerly anticipated debut novel from Ockham New Zealand Book Award-winning author Anthony Lapwood (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Whakaue, Pākehā). A darkly humorous and unsettling work of suburban noir, Mincemeat explores family secrets, fractured relationships, identity and the sometimes dangerous power of storytelling. Years after a painful coming-out experience drove him away from his childhood neighbourhood, Lewis has kept his parents, Madeleine and David, at a distance. But following their separation and subsequent mysterious disappearance, he finds himself drawn back to the family home. With only Doggo, the family's ageing Labrador, for company, Lewis begins piecing together clues about his parents' lives through old audio recordings and handwritten journals. As he uncovers unfamiliar sides of the people he thought he knew, his investigation becomes increasingly tangled with memories, suspicion and paranoia. The deeper Lewis delves into the mystery, the harder it becomes to distinguish truth from imagination. And as a writer, he finds himself compelled to shape the story, even as it threatens to spiral beyond his control. Blending psychological suspense, sharp wit and compelling family drama, Mincemeat is an inventive exploration of the stories families tell, the secrets they keep and the narratives people construct to make sense of their lives. The launch will feature speeches from acclaimed Wellington author pip adam, publishers Damien Levi and Ruby Leonard, and Anthony Lapwood himself. Readers, writers and literary enthusiasts are warmly invited to celebrate the publication of this intriguing new novel. All welcome.
