About this event
Travel is about seeing the world - and finding stories worth telling. In this workshop, Dan Keane draws on great examples of travel writing from Aotearoa and around the world to show participants how to turn their own journeys, both near and far, into memorable stories to keep in a journal or share with friends, family and online. The workshop includes free postcards, which participants can write and mail directly from the workshop. What you’ll learn
- How to embrace the outsider’s eye
- How to avoid travel-writing clichés
- When a travel story belongs to you -and when it belongs to the place you’re visiting
The workshop is suitable for writers and creative souls of all experience levels. Everyone is welcome. Participants will also receive a complimentary Traveler’s Company lined notebook, valued at $10.90 - perfect for capturing stories while on the go. Please bring your favourite writing tool. This workshop is presented as part of the New Zealand Stationery Festival. A Stationery Festival ticket is not required to attend the workshop, although it is highly recommended. Workshop attendees without a Festival ticket will not receive a tote bag and will only be able to access Cobblestones 15 minutes before their class begins. If the available Festival time-entry tickets don’t include a time before the workshop, there’s no need to worry. Anyone holding both a workshop ticket and a Festival ticket will be admitted according to whichever entry time is earliest. About Dan Dan Keane writes the newsletter american.nz, with his work appearing in The Washington Post, Harper’s, Newsroom, The Spinoff, North & South, McSweeney’s and The Best American Nonrequired Reading. He has worked as the Bolivia correspondent for The Associated Press and taught writing at NYU Shanghai and the University of Michigan. He is now a PhD candidate at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. Venue The workshop takes place in a historic classroom at Cobblestones Museum. The paths to the classroom are stone-chip, but the classroom itself is fully accessible and includes an access ramp. Tickets $99 per person. Tickets are available through Eventfinda from Thursday, 24 September 2026. Refund policy Due to the bespoke nature of the workshops and limited capacity, tickets are non-refundable. However, tickets can be transferred to someone else if a participant is unable to attend. For sold-out classes, participants can also contact the organisers to ask whether there is a waitlist. If a waitlist is available, the organisers can put the ticket holder directly in touch with someone who may be able to take over their ticket.
