About the bookshop
A treasured part of Wairarapa's literary community for almost 120 years, Hedley's Books is a fourth-generation, family-owned independent bookshop with a remarkable history and a genuine passion for books. Established in 1907 by William Hedley, who began selling newspapers and books from the back of his bicycle, the business has grown into one of New Zealand's most enduring independent bookshops. Still located on Masterton's Queen Street, Hedley's continues to bring generations of readers together through its welcoming atmosphere, extensive collection and knowledgeable booksellers. The shop offers an impressive range of fiction, non-fiction, children's books, New Zealand literature, art, history, music biographies and more. It is also renowned for its carefully curated collection of rare and collectable books, signed limited editions and fine art photographic prints, including exclusive publications from internationally acclaimed Genesis Publications. More than just a bookshop, Hedley's is an important part of the region's literary scene. It regularly hosts author talks, book launches and a monthly book club, organises the biennial Yarns in Barns: Wairarapa Festival of Reading, and serves as the official bookseller for the popular Featherston Booktown festival. For those unable to visit in person, Hedley's also operates a comprehensive online bookshop at booksonline.co.nz, offering a wide selection of new books for all ages, with delivery throughout New Zealand and internationally. Customers can also browse rare and collectable editions through the main Hedley's website, arrange free in-store collection or take advantage of complimentary gift wrapping. Whether you're searching for the latest bestseller, a thoughtful gift, a rare collectable or simply the pleasure of browsing a wonderful independent bookshop, Hedley's Books is a destination well worth discovering.
